When hybrid cars first came out they carried the hope that they would be the ultimate panacea for what was viewed as the future chronic oil shortage. As it turned out, they neither met the expectations, nor are we running out of oil.
The hybrids themselves have changed too. The first hybrid cars were gasoline-electric type. No, it was the Toyota. Suprised? You betcha! How about this? The history of hybrid cars since 1665. Yes! I mean it! Sixteen hundred.
Back then, in the early Toyota Prius times, it meant huge batteries. Slower than regular cars, in reality clumsy, save the world, hippy type vehicles. There were so few of them that they were real head turners.
Now, just Toyota itself, offers a range of hybrid vehicles, which include the Camry, the Highlander and the, now plural energy source 3-rd generation hybrid Prius, with its latest addition the Prius Plug-In, which can be fully re-charged in just three hours using a standard household outlet or, if you have installed a dedicated 220V Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment (EVSE) outlet, charging takes as little as 1.5 hours.

Now, with all the options and varieties that we have the real question is how do you define hybrid cars? Which one or ones meet the original expectations the closest if at all?
Maybe still these grass green cars are the "greenest" of them all?
