What Is Really Eco-Friendly? Truths and Myths.

Hybrid cars, gasoline equivalent from corn, paper bags instead of plastic.  These are just three examples that come to mind, that have proven to either cause more damage to the environment than they contribute or not to meet the expectations.

The hybrid cars fuel efficiency isn’t significantly better than that of traditional cars.  There is a considerable additional cost both to the manufacturer and the consumer.  The profit margins for the car companies on these cars are lower, the ownership cost to the end-user is higher.  The resale value … Can you even sell a hybrid or you are just stuck with it for life?  Yours or the car’s.  How are the huge batteries handled at the end of the life cycle?  Are they really recycled?  If so, how?  Do you believe in proper handling procedures and safety precautions in China, the humongous garbage field of the contemporary world?

The idea of gasoline from corn almost lead to revolution in Mexico due to the increased world-wide demand and consequently higher prices of the primary food source of the poorer part, which is majority, of the population there.  The energy efficiency to produce gas from corn is, according to scientists … wait for this … negative!  We lose energy on processing corn for gasoline equivalent.  Energy-wise we are better off leaving corn alone.

It takes thousands of years for plastic bags to disintegrate.  Supposedly ...  First all …  There are many kinds of plastic.  Second, do you know how long it takes for a tree to grow to be cut down and processed for a paper bag?

This below is a great source of information on what’s really eco-friendly.
